Gloves have been in existence for centuries and have been used for more than one purpose. The name cashmere is originated from one of the ancient spellings of Kashmir (in India). It is also called as pashm or pashmina. The use of cashmere in the textile industry has been noted in Indian literature since three years before Christ (3 BC). Cashmere has soft fiber, making it a good material for providing warmth sans the bulk. Its texture is very delicate to touch but the material itself is strong. It is light-weight and very soft. However, although cashmere gloves are insulating, soft and very comfortable, they are not made to withstand extremely cold weather conditions. Cashmere comes from the fleece of a certain breed of mountain goats.
Leather, on the other hand, comes from the tanned hide of certain animals. Popular hides used in leather making are those from deer, cows, goats, and sheep. Leather gloves are also very comfortable to wear. They are much stronger and more flexible than cashmere gloves; thereby, supporting more movement and dexterity. Like cashmere, leather can also feel luxurious on the skin. However, there are some types that feel more exquisite than others. Kidskin, deerskin and hairsheep, for example, are finer than cowhide and goatskin. This is the main reason why the former are commonly used in making dress gloves while the latter are used in the creation of casual and utility gloves. The characteristics and purpose to which they are worn vary from one leather glove to another. When it comes to leather gloves, one must always note the purpose of the gloves so as to get the one made for such use.
Cashmere and leather gloves may differ in the materials by which they are made of and in the processes by which they are subjected to. However, both provide the wearer with warmth without sacrificing luxury, comfort and style. The basic, and common sense, rule in getting the perfect size holds. For cashmere gloves, always check that the material is not too thin and is not the least bit itchy. Always go for the ones made of real cashmere. As for leather, always consider the purpose of the gloves. Get a pair that is made out of the skin that best fits your needs and lifestyle. You can never go wrong with either cashmere or leather gloves. But then again, who says you have to choose just one? You can always get yourself a pair of both cashmere and leather gloves!
