GIA or the Gemological Institute of America is a kind of institution for research and educational purposes that is non-profit and that has a mission of maintaining the standards of diamond business and helps in sustaining the integrity of every diamond industry of the country. GIA is where certification and valuation of every diamond is made. They are the ones who will evaluate and determine all sorts of facts about diamonds. Including this are the grading system of each individual diamond and the specific nature of the 4 C’s of a diamond.
GIA certified diamonds are those diamonds that are recognized by them or they are known as GIA certified diamonds. When your diamond has a value of over 1 carat in size they are documented and stored in the GIA Diamond Grading Report and when your diamond has a little below than 1 carat in size then they are stored and documented in a Diamond Dossier Report. GIA certified diamonds identify these certain characteristics of diamonds:
Diamond’s Dimensions – the basic thing that GIA will determine into your diamond is its actual size or shall we say the precise and the actual size of your diamond according to their own scales. They are usually measured in millimeters. They will determine the size of your diamond depending on the symmetry of its shapes. There are also instances that they will determine it from the overall length-to-weight ratio of your diamond.
Diamond’s Weight – Diamond’s weight are determined in carats. There are a lot of people that are confused about the weight of the diamond as to its size. Well size will never be the basis of its weight because there are times wherein you will tend to look at a diamond larger as it seems because of its cut but if you will look at it closer you will find it that they are still the same compared to another diamond of the same size but different cut.
Color Grading – The most desired characteristic of a diamond is when it turns colorless or clear but there are other diamonds that exhibits a fancy type of color like pink, blue, yellow or even green. Another technique used by gemologists in determining the real diamond out from the fake ones is by introducing it to the UV light. When it radiates a color of blue then it is likely to be a real diamond.
Clarity Grading – When we say clarity it is the measure of a diamond’s inclusions or others may call it flaws. These are normal because there is no such thing here in earth has a perfect finished surface. Even the flawless clarity of grades there are still some inclusions on it but to a very microscopic scale only.
Cut Grading – This refers to the overall cut characteristic or the overall shape of the diamond and how well the cut was made.
Surface Quality – Diamonds can be polished in order to have a perfectly smooth surface to make them brilliant when an incoming ray of light strikes them. Polish grades are distinguished by means of its brilliance. The higher is the ideal and the lower is the poor.
If a diamond has a VS1 clarity grade then you cannot see any flaws on it through your naked eye. GIA certified diamonds has microprint lines, holograms and security screens created especially for it. This will make the diamond unique above others and this will enable identification of lost diamonds possible in an easy way. Having a GIA certificate has a lot of benefits to you. You can have insurance also in case your diamond is lost and you can also have a discrete profile of it stored in them. This is to make sure that the precious stone you have is authentic and its 100% owned by only you.
