Here are a few methods you can employ to determine the quality of the cashmere sweater in your garment.
The best available tools are your fingertips. Yes, I said your fingertips! The fabric should feel extremely soft. If it doesn’t, that may indicate the use of lower quality (coarser) wool from the back or legs of the goat were used in fabricating the yarn.
You should also check the heft of the garment. Cashmere is a light fabric, but it should feel substantial and have some heft to it.
Determine the density of the weave. Is it loose or coarse? Is the fabric limp? If so, the garment may be cheaply made. Pull the sides of the sweater outward and then let go. It should snap back to its original shape.
Pilling and shedding are two more red flags. The highest quality cashmere wool comes from the underbelly and throat of the animal. These are long fibers and much less likely to pill or shed than the shorter fibers found on the back and legs of the goat.
Don’t confuse this with the pilling that results from improper care of the garment. Areas of excess wear, like elbows, seats and even areas in constant contact with something like the strap of a shoulder bag or briefcase can cause pilling. Pilling like this is not the fault of the fabric, but rather the fault of the wearer. Try to protect your garment from this type of wear.

This Henley style sweater is a cashmere and wool blend, making it a little more suitable for casual wear. I love the details. It has a seven-button placket, as advertised, and ribbed collar, sleeves and hem. I truly enjoy wearing it and hope to acquire another around Christmas if my husband takes the hints I’ve been dropping.
